Principles are meant to protectindividualsin the environment where they reside. The rules governing a settingmust be followed, and whenever a rule is broken, some consequencesfollow. For instance, in the Kaiser Permanente Health Care Centersituation, an employee happened to lose a laptop containingconfidential information of thirty-eight thousand other Permanentemembers and private records of patients. For starters, that was abreach of personal data of many people, which could cause stigma incase the information happens to be shared with unknown third partiesin social media. Additionally, the patients’ records are sensitiveinformation that the Health Care facility cannot afford to lose orlet be displayed in public. However, there is always a solution forsuch an issue.
ThePrivacy Rule standards are a remedy to this problem as they stipulatethenecessity of protecting health information. The Employees should berequired to answer in case there was a breach of any individual’sprivate information. For instance, by ensuring that the discretionregulation is in place in the organization, the hospitaladministration will guarantee that workforces do not walk around withpatients’ facts on their personal computers. Additionally, theinstitute will encrypt such statistics within the corporate andcreate backup drives to protect clients’ data from hackers andother third parties. The agency would also link the information ofeach employee to a supercomputer to make certain that when one losesa machine, he/she can report it immediately to the correctdepartment, in order to log it out of the system.
Employeeswill also be advised to use passwords on their computers to confirmsafety and confidentiality of patients’ information. According toHealth Care Ethics, an employee is supposed to put the needs andinterests of a patient before anything else (Dawson, 2014). Thisincludes the manner in which she or he handles the patient’s healthinformation. In relation to the case above, the employee, leavingbehind a laptop that had a patient’s evidence suggests that thePermanente member did not care about the code of ethics guarding thepatient and is supposed to be suspended or fired from the workplacefor the act.
