Culturallycompetent care is a type of health care that takes into considerationthe diversity of the patient and respects cultural factors such asbehaviors, language, communication styles, attitudes, and beliefswhich are likely to affect the health of the patients and the carethat they can be given (Purnell,2013).Therefore, nurses should tailor their care such that they meet thelinguistic, social, and cultural needs of the patients. Acomprehensive health history should include the history of thepatient such as social, occupational, family, and sexual history.Also, a complete history should have past and present illness report.Barriers can be faced in the process of collecting a comprehensivehealth record from patients due to language barriers and lack ofdiversity among colleagues (Purnell,2013).

Thefirst obstacle that practitioners face is poor communication with thepatients. Sometimes, health experts do not clearly understand whatthe patients tell them, especially when they communicate in alanguage that they are unfamiliar with. This is even worse when thereis no medical interpreter around to aid in translating thecommunication with the patients. Besides, some patients use stylesthat practitioners do not understand thus, hindering a viablecommunication amid the two parties. This affects the way they collectthe medical data from patients.

Anotherchallenge that affects health experts’ efforts in collectingcomprehensive information from the patients is the lack of diversityin an institution’s workforce. The composition of the workforcelacks diversity such that most employees come from a particular race.Therefore, it is hard to get someone who can interpret for themwhenever they are handling a patient with whom they do not understandhis/her language. The health institutions should employ people fromdiverse races to ensure that the nurses provide a culturallycompetent care to the patients (Purnell,2013).
