Beforerating myself in line with the table in the American Association ofCritical-Care Nurses (2006) website, I used to harbor the notion thatthe most important set of skills for a nurse leader were academicproficiencies. I used to think that for a certified nurse to be aneffective leader, he/she had to possess the highest academic gradesin a relevant field. Nonetheless, after rating myself using fourareas of the “NurseManager Skills Inventory,”I completely changed my perception about the important tenets a nurseleader should possess. Above and beyond academic qualification, I nowknow that engaging in reflective practice is also an important tenetfor a nurse leader. The assessment is based on four major areas:personal and professional accountability, career planning, personaljourney disciplines, and reflective practice tenets (AACCN, 2006).The subsequent section of this essay is an analysis of my strengthson the basis of the itemized content areas:

Personaland Professional Accountability

Onaccount of my academic action plans, I am proud to say that I havepassed all the examinations I have ever done in my life. From theskills inventory, I learnt that I am an expert in my field because Ipossess more than the basic academic certification appropriate in myfield. This is why I am a proud qualified nurse.

SinceI clearly understand the importance of amplifying my proficiency innursing, it is indispensable for me to advance my education further.In this regard, I have a career plan that can only be accomplishedthrough education advancement. Rating myself by the skills inventory,I can assertively say that I am a “value-added” nurse because Iam a member of a number of professional associations that facilitatenetworking and professional development in the field of nursing.

Followingmy involvement with these professional associations, I can positivelyaffirm that I am an expert because I have been able to learn moreabout the ethical behaviors and practices that support scopes ofnursing practice and nursing standards. In as much as I have actionplans for almost every aspect of my life, I have annual mechanisms Iemploy to do self-assessments. Per se, I have yearly mechanisms I useto keep track of the mileage covered in terms of my personal andprofessional development in my capacity as a nurse. Through theseself-assessments, I pinpoint the areas I need to improve on in bothscopes of growth.

CareerPlanning

Asinitially specified, I am a certified nurse. Moreover, I am a memberof a number of professional associations that facilitate networkingand professional development in nursing as a career. To this level, Ithoroughly understand my current job description. At the same time, Iam aware of the present-day levels of nursing practice. Therefore,judging by the skills inventory, I can positively assert that I am anexpert in comparing both scopes of nursing practice.

Bearingin mind that nursing as a career changes rapidly, there is the needto position myself in a manner that I will be able to remain relevantin a future health care setting. In this regard, I plan to further myeducation so that I can become a well renowned medical researcher.According toMcAlister (2016),the 21stcentury is characterized by unexplainable illnesses like Ebola, SARS,and viruses like the Zika virus. Therefore, I feel that there is theneed for me to contribute in providing medical solutions to all the21stcentury diseases that have no apparent cause or cure.

Tothis effect, I plan to further my education so that I can be part ofa medical research team that works to coin solutions to present-day“seemingly” terminal illnesses. That is why I, as part of myaction plans, have a career plan that will provide me with a clearprofessional direction while offering flexibility and capacity toadapt to future health care scenarios. Per se, as per the skillsinventory, I can certainly assert that I am an expert in all aspectsof my career planning. The subsequent sections will discuss myweaknesses:

Accordingto Leeand Kim (2015),knowing your strengths and weaknesses is a bonus point as a healthcare professional. In the previous sections, I have highlighted allthe areas I am proficient. Nonetheless, the skills inventory made mediscover the fact that I am a novice when it comes to mattersregarding shared leadership. I am a member of nursing managingcouncils, but I have scanty knowledge about how these institutionspromote shared leadership which explains my little knowledge aboutthe techniques of “action learning” to problem solving, andpersonally reflecting on decisions. As a wishful nursing leader, thenursing leader skills inventory highlighted the fact that I fallshort in the practice of reflection as a leadership behavior. Toimprove on my leadership growth, I have made internalizing all thefundamental tenets of leadership a personal goal. Armed with thispertinent information, I will be in a position to advance myself asan aspiring nursing leader. With this knowledge, I will be able tolearn how to practice reflection as an essential leadership behavior.

Reiteratingthe statements made earlier, education is the axis along which thegoals of my personal and professional development are built upon.Therefore, I plan on taking leadership classes, where I will have theopportunity to learn all the fundamental tenets of the concept ofleadership. Having acquired these leadership proficiencies, I will beable to make the necessary changes in my workplace. The expansion ofmy leadership proficiencies will definitely make my workplace betterbecause the newly acquired leadership skills will assist me toeffectively execute my management duties. These skills will help meupgrade my current organization’s culture which will be mirroredby an increase in revenue.

ReflectivePractice Reference Behaviors

Asindicated earlier, I am not an adept at engaging in reflectivepractice tenets according to the skills inventory. Above and beyondlearning these tenets in class depending on models developed byothers, I can cultivate them personally. After internalizing thesetenets, I will learn to function normally amid the ambiguity of ourcompany’s environment. With reflective practice reference tenets, Iwill be in a position to appreciate diversity in the form of gender,race, religion, or sexual orientation. Correspondingly, with thesereflective practice reference tenets, I will be able to search forthe potential in myself and others as well. To become a better nurseleader, I comprehend the importance of getting to learn how to engagein reflective practice as an important leadership tenet.

Conclusion

Beforerating myself as per the Nursing Manager Skills Inventory, I used tohave a misconception about the set of skills an effective nurseleader should possess. Rating myself as a competent nurse, I can saythat I am competent in personal and professional accountability andcareer learning. Correspondingly, I became aware of the fact that Iam not proficient in reflective practice reference tenets. In thisregard, I have plans to study so as to boost my proficiency inpracticing reflective reference tenets as an effective nurse leader.With this knowledge, I am certain of the fact that I will become amore knowledgeable professional in nursing practice.
