Translation Paper

Translation requires transfer of specific words, messages and ideasfrom a source language to another by following and retaining bothliterary and cultural contexts of the information. While translatingthe Lazy Song by Bruno Mars from Native American English toChinese, I was introduced to a number of issues. These included newculture, societal ideals as well as differing civilizations whichdefined the American society. The translation also sensitized me tonew language format, grammar, words, expressions and differingaudience from original version to the new version. Translating thesong to Chinese brought me to a situation where some words could notbe interpreted. In the original English version there were words orexpressions on slang and daily life that were hard to translate. Forinstance, it was difficult for me to translate such words as“snuggie” and “dougie” because they are totally vague inChinese language. The aspect of translating word by word into mymother language lost the intent meaning. I could not get the perfectpiece while following each translation word by word. Ultimately, theclarity and logical flow of ideas became problematic to me.

In the initial song, the audience are young people especially collegestudents. The song relates to their daily life, where promiscuity, parties, over sleeping and hatred for education are common. The songwriter brings out the theme of young-age liberalism clearly but in mytranslated version creating such a theme was problematic. I lackedthe perquisite knowledge of the language and subject matter of thesong thus breaking the crucial sound translation. The structuralframe work of the song, its cohesiveness, cultural basis and myriadgrammatical errors ensued in the translated version. The translatedversion also targeted the young audience but the informationpresented was distorted giving a different meaning from the sourcefile.
