Merritt Island, Florida – Quebec’s École Édouard-Montpetit plated four runs in three different innings to hand the iCASE Baseball Academy its first Spring Training loss in a 12-3 in a game played much more closely than the score indicated.
iCASE scored one run in each of the first three innings but left nine runners stranded over the first four innings. The closest the Huskies got was in the bottom of the third inning when Jenna Hillman drilled a two-out, two-strike line shot over the shortstop’s head to score Cam McDougall, narrowing the deficit to 4-3. However, after Matt Bondy was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Édouard-Montpetit managed to get out of the inning without any further damage.
“No matter how you slice it, twelve is a big number to give up in a seven-inning game, but what hurt us the most today was that ten of those were scored with two outs. When we threatened, they were able to snuff our rallies, but when they threatened, it was just one of those days that we weren’t able to shut the door,” said iCASE field manager/GM Tom Valcke.
“I commend Stéphane Lepage and his coaching staff, as their sport-études programme plays the game the way it is meant to be played. They capitalized on the fourth and fifth outs that we were handing them due to errors. We’re already in discussions about connecting with them again next Fall in a home and away series.”
Three different iCASE pitchers, Chris Iltshishin, Yanik Leroux and Brad Ellis, threw a shutout inning, but gave up a four- spot in their other inning. Tyler Berry allowed a pair of baserunners but worked out of the lone inning he threw.
Offensively, prior to Hillman’s RBI single, McDougall led off the game with a walk, stole second, and easily trotted home on Stephen Gade’s blast to the right field warning track that wound up a stand-up double. In the second, Joe McCorkindale was hit by a pitch, swiped second, and scored on Iltshishin’s liner up the middle.
iCASE opened their Florida trip with three practices over two days in Satellite Beach leading to a 3-2 victory over the London Badgers on Monday, so their record now stands at a win and a loss. They’ll rest their pitching staff Wednesday as they have a guided campus tour scheduled for the University of Central Florida, the largest public university in the USA with 65,000 students enrolled. They will practice in the afternoon and then be guests of UCF at their 4:00pm game when they host Florida State University featuring Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston.
iCASE is a full-time college prep program designed to bring baseball players to their potential through a year-round, baseball-specific training program, while acquiring credit for training towards their Ontario Secondary School diplomas. The host school, Stratford Northwestern Secondary School belongs to the Avon Maitland District School Board.
